After toying with the idea, for many months, if not years, I have finally succumbed to my secret desires to start a 'blog'. Social media is saturated with bloggers, influencers, MUAs, campaigners, ands there's almost a general consensus that if you haven't joined the gravy train already, you've missed your chance. A culture obsessed with followers, selfies, impressions, and the portrayal of a perfect life; we are now far from the Ireland that I remember growing up in (along with any other 80's babies that is).
Like most young women of my age, I follow many social media accounts. Scrolling through my feed I will see everything and anything from Mental Health Awareness Advocates, to Fitness Fanatics, to 'famous for being famous' Public Figures, Fashion & Makeup veterans, and Skincare Experts. Do I enjoy all of the accounts I follow? Not necessary. Do the accounts and people I follow have a considerable influence on how I feel about myself and/or the world on any given day? Yes. Do I spend a considerable amount of time scrolling, in the search for something else? Yes. I can't be certain but I'd hazard a guess that many people share similar sentiments.
Questioning my relationship with social media, wondering how I can make it a healthier and beneficial space for me & and a current road block in my personal life, have led me to do something that has not been part of my life for many years; I've decided to return to writing. I am eager to see how it feels to be on the other side of the content. I am keen to develop my writing skills. I am interested to see how I fair in my commitment to writing an article a week. But more than anything, I am excited to have a space to pour my thoughts, opinions, likes, dislikes, philosophies & experiences. I hope to touch on many things on my blog, and I am certain my content will take its own direction in time. For now though, it's very much in it's infancy, and I would be dishonest if I were to say, it's not without anxiety that I click the 'publish' button.
The fact that I am writing this article is already a victory for me, albeit self proclaimed. Sometimes the thoughts and apprehensions surrounding an action, overshadow the potential benefits it holds. If one person reads this passage, and decides to bite the bullet, and do something they've been procrastinating about, it would be a welcomed added bonus. What could be more satisfying than helping yourself through writing; but helping another person through writing.
